- Try to gather all of the equipment that you will need to refinish the floor (don't forget the Personal Protective Equipment!) before starting.
- Line your mop bucket with a garbage liner. This saves on clean-up AND protects the floor finish.
- When pouring the floor finish into the bucket, pour onto the mop to help reduce foaming.
- If you are using a wringer, only wring out the bottom half of the mop to stop it from dripping.
- Outline a manageable area then work in a figure 8 motion to fill in. On the first coat, leave 6-12 inches away from the walls.
- When you are finished with the entire coat, leave sit for about 10 minutes. Then you can use a floor fan to speed the dry time. Just be sure the fan is not blowing directly on the floor- this could lead to bubbles and/or uneven drying.
- Start a new coat when the floor is dry to the touch- 30-45 min depending on temperature, humidity and ventilation.
- You can use a pencil to make a small mark on one of the coats in a high-traffic area. As the finish wears down from traffic and/or buffing, therefore removing the mark, it can help you gauge how many coats are left.
- AMS places 100% solids when refinishing a floor. This means if your floor finish has "25% solids" we recommend putting at least 4 coats down.
